Power of the Pen Results
On Thursday, May 22nd, five of our Bay Middle School writers traveled to Ashland University to compete at the prestigious Power of the Pen State Tournament. These writers had to make it through both District and Regional competitions to qualify for the State tournament (it ends up being about the top 20% of competitive Power of the Pen writers in the State of Ohio).
BMS States writers were:
7th Grade
Charlotte Colman
8th Grade
Oona Louis
Penny Herman
Sam Vardon
Lily Young (*Lily also made it to States in 7th grade - an amazing feat to qualify two years in a row!)
Our BMS results from States:
Oona Louis and Lily Young were both recognized for a Platinum Pen Award. The Platinum Pen Award is one of the highest honors awarded by Power of the Pen. Outstanding student compositions that emerge during the current Power of the Pen tournament season will be published in the Book of Winners. It is from this body of published material that selections are made for all special awards and scholarships.
Oona's story, "The Ultimate Search" from the District tournament, will be published in the 2025 Book of Winners for Power of the Pen.
Lily's story, "Sibling Rivalry" from our Regionals tournament, was also chosen to be published in the 2025 Book of Winners.
Also, making it to the top 52 competition writers at States (out of 500 writers) were:
Charlotte Colman and Sam Vardon!
This is a huge accomplishment as there were 500 writers from 176 schools in attendance at States this year. Charlotte and Sam then had to write in a 4th "Power Round" or Final Round of writing and did very well.
